When I was a kid, I read an article about Herbie in one of my dad's car-type magazines. It had to be Motor Trend, Mechanix Illustrated, Popular Mechanics, or maybe Popular Science. It was a regular magazine feature called "Supertune," and this issue talked about what Disney's techs did to at least one of the Herbies to make it go fast. This had to be in the early seventies during the filming of one of the sequels, because I was already a Herbie fan at that time.
I remember an "under-the hood" photo of the engine, which to my adolescent eyes looked like a VW engine, but it could have been either a Porsche engine or a modded VW engine. I'm probably older than most of you on the forum, so it may be that no one else remembers this. I doubt issues are archived back that far. I thought this may be of interest, and with any luck the article will turn up somewhere.
I enjoy reading everyone's contributions and thoughts on this forum, and I wish I had more to contribute!
