Nope. I picked what was literally the best of the lot. By the time the auctioneers got to it 12 hours into the sale, I only had to outbid the scrap metal dealers. I paid $80 for the car and $50 to a couple of dudes with a trailer to haul it to our house. Total investment: $130, with my sole intention to see it live again someday, whether it was with me or somebody else.

It was a matter of principle. There was just too much VW carnage going on not to see at least one survivor escape. And believe me, I could have used it for parts many times and I didn't.

If you build a car exactly as it was originally, it will work just fine. -- Jay Leno
