During our recent trip to Western New York with the '52 Standard, we visited the original
Wurlitzer Building in the Town of Wheatfield. It seemed like the perfect photo op. |

That car never ceases to amaze me, Doc. I've gotta make a point to see it in person someday.

Cool photos. The first one it blends right in with the grey of the building.
So how many hours did the drive to NY take in the standard? What was the most you did non-stop? How was the show? Enquiring minds want to know! |

Great pics and a very impressive little car. There is just something very appealing about this vintage of VW. Simple, clean and strictly functional and yet so
very attractive. Nice.

I have a jukebox that was made there. Very nice. Did you get a photo with the Wurlitzer sign visible?
The cool thing is that there's a vending equipment supplier in there now. Wico, I believe. When they heard the building was going to be torn down, they bought it, moved the operation there (both at a great expense), and fixed up the grounds. It just seemed a natural home for their business, who has handled parts and supplies for most makes and types of vending equipment, including Wurlitzer, for at least 6 decades. Here's a pixilated, but stunning photo of part of the grounds. Mind you, this was a FACTORY! Wurlitzer employees enjoyed wonderful benefits of all kinds long before they were standard practice. The result, a proud and motivated workforce that turned out rock solid products. Link to some cool photos. Detail of the statue in Doc's photo:
The central tower. The lighter wall sections were once expansive panes of windows. Built 1892-1902.:

BullVW wrote: I'll post another thread about the show. It was fantastic. About taking the standard to Buffalo, all I said was we took it up and drove it around for two weeks. I never said we drove it from Florida. I ran into one guy at the show who was talking out his ass about how he would have driven it up. Problem is, there's not a chance in hell he would ever make the investment to own one, so he's in no position to talk about what I should or shouldn't have done. |

Oh, she'd have made it, but it would have been a needlessly long and grueling trip.

*Gasp* Doc towed a car? That's still very cool you brought it up though. Probably made for some great driving. And that setting for the pics is super.

forgive my dumbness here, i know kyle has said that juke boxes were made here but what about the big Wurlitzer Organs that used to be in Cinema's ( or
picture house's) as they were called back then.
Great looking car Doc. Standard's rock. jon |

Yep. The organs were made there too. There's a "Mighty Wurlitzer" in the lobby. So far as towing goes, I will drive a 40hp cross country, or even a 36, but 25hp doesn't cut it in the mountains. Plus hard suspension and standard seats don't do much for your butt. Here's a shot of my partner in crime.

I don't know why, but I always thought the little notch in split window door glass was so cool.

That notch gets endless comments at shows, mostly asking if it's original. It is, and was cut that way to let in air without lowering the window. (No vent
wing.)

Doc,
Is your car actually a '52 or is it a '51 that sat about a while before being registered? I thought '52's had quarter lights, oval horn grilles on the wings and a Oval style Dash. Love this car would love a standard. Also, is the wing (fender) on drivers side is a replacement as it should have no horn grille, as the the horn should be mounted on the bumper? That wing looks like it's from an export model, not a standard. Is the car how you bought it Doc. Do you have any more pics??? I'm on the hunt for a '54 oval that was a CKD kit built in Ireland.. Just love the old vintage veedubs, so believe me that I'm not picking fault, just trying to gain answers to expand knowledge, as we can not know everything.

It is a Split dash '52, the "Zwitter" oval dash splits didn't start untill October of '52. The vent windows and the oval horn grills
started around the same time as the oval dash. The fender is not a replacement, Late split dash standards had the horn behind the fender and not on the bumper.
