Chattanooga Tennessee to be precise. The release I read said that it should be up and running by 2011. And will produce a mid size car specifically for the
North American market. I know alot of rumors have been flying around at the replacement for the current Passat. I was surprised at the number of a $1 billion
boost to the economy. So We'll see.

Here's the story from USA Today on this new plant.
http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2008-07-15-volkswagen-tennessee_N.htm I'm hoping for good things to come of this. 2 nice sedans in the Jetta and Passat, yet they remain a very small presence in the US market.

Only to meet their bajillion-million car sales goal by 2018 (OK, maybe more like 200,000) :-D.
let's hope they learned from the Westmoreland experience. a) it won't be union. b) Don't let the state take (and then neglect) control. It's different this time as TN has been wooing VW for this plant. c) It's a different world now, probably for the better. Everyone is more globally conscious. |

One thing that's for sure is that the cars produced here will be more in line price wise for the market. It's not going to cost VW an arm, a leg, and
first born to get them shipped. Instead it will only cost and arm and a leg. lol. After having been here in Europe for the last two weeks one thing I have
noticed is that the Polo, Lupo, Fox, Passat, and Golf are all over the place here. I'd say 95% of them are diesel too. It's still mind bogling why
VWGoA doesn't import some of these cars to the US. But that should change with the new factory. I'm sure the car will be designed at their California
studio too.

Tennessee officials in recent weeks approved $1.25 million for work at the Chattanooga site that was once part of an Army ammunition plant complex. Interesting history of the site, considering VW's own history. I also hope this results in an affordable Volkswagen.

I'd also add that by 2011, the new US president's policies will have turned the economy around and the German built Passat will be cheaper to purchase
than the US built counterpart.

Why are you in Europe Albert? It's crazy with all the VW's running around. It's like a staple over there. I would be curious if the next
generation Passat's body (whatever it may be called) will be designed here too.
That is interesting about the location. Then again, the US supplied tooling to make Kubelwagen and Schwimmwagen, so finally full circle haha @ BullVW...so true (about the economy). we can only hope. |

Sweet I have relatives in Chattanooga. So I can probably just chill with them whenever I come down the see the factory. I think VW should host a car show when
they open the factory.

I am pretty confident you will be behind the wheel of your own Air-Cooled VW by the time the factory opens in 2011 Vondell.

There is a pretty nice vw show already in TN at Camp Jordan around April. Been going on for around ten years. Maybe VW will be more involved. Maybe.

It's partially related, so I'll just add it in here.
I just heard in the radio that The Volkswagen de Mexico plant in Puebla just started to send "Partially assembled Boras" to India, the final assembly will be done there. The guy in the talk-show didn't explained Who or Where will the final assembly be done, all this is because of the great demand for Boras in India. ![]()

Bora is the Jetta in North America...
Hopefully, not another "too little, too late" story for VW. I do hope it means positive things for VW and us, the consumer. I'd love to buy a new VW next time I buy a car, but if they continue to be much more expensive than the competition ($2-3k more), I'll have to buy something else. In Canada, prices are not in line with the US, though our currency is nearly at par. We're still priced higher here than in the US. I suppose if I could find the right used VW, their Previously Loved used VW program could get me a nearly new VW...Moot point at this point in time, as I can't afford a new or used car right now, and the new factory isn't built yet!

the Up! will reportedly no longer be rear wheel drive, rear engined but front wheel drive, front engined...so basically the next gen. Lupo/Fox/whatever you
want to call it. Hopefully it wont lose its versatility when it does reach fruition (regardless if it comes to the US)

Well, the UP is supposed to get approaching 80 MPG, so we'll say conservatively, 70 mpg. That's about triple what most people are getting. Even the
Smart car is only good for about 40/45 (current, flawed EPA mileage standard) and 33/41 on the new, more practical 2008 standard.
On the current, soon-to-be-old standard, they're basically allowed to run the car on a track at a constant speed at the car's optimum rpm. It doesn't take into account idling, stop and start traffic, and variable speeds. In other words, it's overly optimistic.
